Stone Tower 3
Mount Auburn
Founded before the Civil War by Dr. Jacob Bigelow and Joseph Story, Mt. Auburn was one of the first cemeteries to be designed in the
''rural'' style. The entrance gate was created in 1843 by Jacob Bigelow, in the Egyptian Revival style. Nearby is the tomb of Spurzheim
and the Mount Auburn Chapel (also designed by Bigelow). The Washington Tower in the middle of the cemetery offers a complete view
of the Boston skyline. There is also the Memorial Sphinx to the Union Dead, sculpted by Martin Milmore in 1871.
Some of the nation's most creative minds, powerful politicians and brave soldiers rest in Mount Auburn Cemetery: Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, Oliver Wendall Holmes, B.F. Skinner, author and philanthropist Dorothea Dix, cookbook author Fannie Farmer, John
Bartlett, Winslow Homer, Charles Bullfinch and Henry Cabot Lodge.
