A Bit of History about the Creese and Cook Co.
The Creese & Cook Co. (Former) property is abandoned tannery located at 25 Clinton Avenue in Danvers, Essex County,
Massachusetts. From the early 1930s until 1984, the property was used for tannery activities. No tannery or other industrial
activities have taken place on site since 1984. The property is bordered to the north by wetlands and the Crane River, to the south
by Clinton Avenue, to the east by private residences, and to the west by Route 128.
The main facility was located on the south bank of the Crane River and consisted of a beamhouse where tanning operations had
occurred. Tannery operations had created two landfills (landfills A and B) on site for disposal of solids (primarily hide pieces,
trimmings, lime, and wastewater screenings) from the manufacturing process. Primary constituents found in the tannery waste
were trivalent chromium, metals, chlorinated hydocarbons, and traces of solvents and sulfides. An old lagoon system (consisting
of two pits) located east of the beamhouse, discharged into the Crane River. A lined waste containment cell was constructed for
disposal of excavated and solidified wastes from the property.
